The State of New York launched the 100th anniversary of women voting in the state on March 1, 2017 with a women’s history exhibit up for public view for thirty days. Now the “Spirit of 1776” wagon has been moved over to the New York State Museum where it is promoting the large women’s suffrage exhibit at the museum in November 2017. That exhibit will be on view through May 2018.

IN OTHER NEWS: The 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial has a Facebook page. The Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative (WVCI) is a collaborative effort created to share information and stimulate activities around the country in the years leading up to 2020. It is run by a volunteer task force, that represents the various segments of the historical women’s suffrage movement, contemporary women’s organizations, and scholars. For more information.

Listen to the “NonFiction Railroad” interview of Olivia Twine from WIOX radio in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. “The Writer’s Voice” moderator Bonnie Lykes-Bigler asks Twine, a contributing editor to SuffrageCentennials.com, about the 2017 New York State suffrage centennial. Olivia provides us with a fascinating overview of her work relative to suffrage and women’s history. In 2015, the town of Woodstock, New York passed a resolution encouraging its residents to honor its women’s history and to participate in the 2017 suffrage centennial. Olivia’s recent article on the state centennial highlights upcoming special events and exhibits during 2017.

“The Yellow Wallpaper” stars Michèle LaRue in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s feminist thriller. In 1885, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a vibrant young woman and dedicated writer, was brought to her knees by marriage, a well-meaning husband, and a questionable “cure.” Relying on blind faith, instinct, and courage, she willed herself back to health. Perhaps the single element most vital to her recovery was the writing of “The Yellow WallPaper” published in 1892. Turning autobiography to fiction, the story continues to fascinate readers today. Planning for 2020: Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative

Planning for the 2020 national suffrage centennial is underway thanks to a volunteer task force that has been considering a logo for the celebration, among other ongoing plans. While there are many events and observances that qualify for suffrage centennial recognition, the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial initiative is taking the lead by collecting information about events and celebrations planned for the nation’s suffrage centennial observance. There are stirrings in Washington State, Rhode Island, New York State, and other parts of the nation. Regular reports are being circulated in a listserv distributed among interested individuals and organizations.

Post to the listserv “Suffrage2020” by sending an email with a message to Suffrage2020@thezahnisers.com.

We’re off to women’s suffrage centennial events at Susan B. Anthony house in Rochester, New York

This year, 2017, is the centennial observance of New York State’s women voting for 100 years. As the “Cradle” of the women’s rights movement in the United States, New York has plenty to offer. Head north from New York City (where there’s a lot going on) and then stake out a journey to the Finger Lakes where there’s something for everyone in the family. Four states have suffrage centennial observances planned before the national suffrage centennial in 2020: New York, Michigan, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. Local organizations are linking their action and community agendas to suffrage centennial celebrations. A centennial comes only once a year, so why not take advantage of it?

This year’s program at the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester on February 15, 2017 features Ann Dexter Gordon, the leading authority on Susan B. Anthony, editor of the Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, and research professor in the Department of History at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Advance planning is recommended so that when August 26th in 2017 comes around, you are prepared. August 26th is Women’s Equality Day when we recognize the national observance of the passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. What are you planning? A fundraiser, lecture, exhibit, reception, community project? Susan B. Anthony spent 50 years of her life working for women’s voting rights. A hush comes over the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester, NY when groups, visitors, and tourists open the front door and walk through the building to learn about how the past, present and future come together.

The 2017 women’s march in Washington, DC, across the nation and around the world was thrilling. It seemed like we were speaking to a deep dark hole in 2015 when we celebrated the 95th observance of the 19th Amendment. Now, 2020 is next when American women will have been voting for 100 years. Upcoming: Women’s History Month in March 2017; Convention Days in Seneca Falls, NY in July, and we’re challenging you now to start planning for August 26th. Start with your organization or community event. Don’t forget that in 2016 another women’s history national monument was added to the National Park Service—the Belmont-Paul National Monument in Washington, DC.

The remainder of this weekend is to process and let sink in the impact of the 2017 march on Washington. Millions of people participated online and the impact will be magnified. Onward!

Inez Milholland citizens medal petition now in circulation during Obama’s last days in office!

The nomination for a presidential citizens medal for Inez Milholland (1886-1916) is now circulating in Washington, DC. More than a year ago U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier nominated Milholland for the honor. We have no word as to the prospect of the award being considered before the transition of one administration to another. This year, 2016, is the centennial observance of Milholland’s death. For the past year the National Women’s History Project has been working hard to write Inez into American history as the nation’s suffrage martyr. This past week, high school students in Lake George, New York featured Inez along with other votes for women activists in a production, “Forward into Light,” that attracted considerable attention in Lake George, NY and surrounding communities.

We’re coming down to the wire. Every year we circulate our Santa wish list. Take a look at our wish list for December 2014. We wished for a funded New York State suffrage centennial commission. NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation creating and funding a suffrage centennial commission from 2017 through 2020, the nation’s suffrage centennial when American women will have been voting for 100 years.

This year, 2016, we’re asking Santa for a miracle: a presidential citizens medal for our nation’s suffrage martyr, Inez Milholland. This year, 2016, is the centennial observance of her death on November 25, 1916. Visit the centennial web site for details. InezMilhollandCentennial.com The citizens medal application has been sponsored and supported by the National Womens History Project.

We’re carrying forward two wishes from the past: a national women’s suffrage memorial as proposed and being planned by Turning Point Suffragist Memorial. And a statue in NYC’s Central Park honoring Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and many others. Let’s support the completion of a memorial and a women’s statue in Central Park on or before the national 2020 suffrage centennial. To these wishes, we’ve added the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution!

With the announcement of Hillary Clinton as the first woman to be a major party’s presidential candidate, there was loud cheering for the connection between the issues of the present day and the past. And especially loud cheering for the activists of the women’s suffrage movement. The word “suffrage” is coming into its own. It still has a long way to go in terms of mass recognition, but things have changed. Not long ago, mention of the word “suffrage” was guaranteed to make people’s eyes glaze over. That’s changing. About time! And the references to Seneca Falls, New York has brought that 1848 event located in upstate New York to the attention of millions of Americans. Keep the conversation ongoing. The year 2020 is the national centennial observance of women voting in the United States.

Suffragist Inez Milholland is a “shining star,” according to U.S. Representative Jackie Speier

Sign the petition urging U.S President Obama to award suffragist Inez Milholland with a Presidential Citizen’s Medal.

In a letter where U.S. Representative Jackie Speier nominated suffrage activist Inez Milholland for the Presidential Citizens Medal, America’s suffrage martyr was described as “…a shining star in the pantheon of inspiring leaders of the women’s suffrage movement in the early 20th century.”

During the 2016 election  year, Milholland will be honored. It’s the centennial year of Milholland’s death. And during 2017, Milholland will also receive her share of recognition during the centennial observance of New York State’s suffrage centennial when New York women will have been voting for 100 years.

Happy New Year from Suffrage CentennialsU.S. Representative Speier described Milholland’s sacrifice in her letter to U.S. President Obama:

“Inez Milholland continued working tirelessly for the women’s suffrage movement for several years when she embarked –against medical advice because of a medical condition– on a grueling five week, eleven state tour of the western United States. At one of the stops…while speaking at a rally advocating for the constitutional amendment for universal suffrage, she suddenly collapsed. Her last public words were ‘Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty’? She never recovered and died in a hospital some weeks later at age 30 in 1916. Suffragists at that time termed her a ‘martyr’ for women’s suffrage. She was given a martyr’s remembrance on Christmas Day, attended by over a thousand people under the rotunda at Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol –the first woman to be honored in this way.”

U.S. Representative Speier concluded: “As the centennial of her death and of the 19th Amendment approach, I can think of no better way to honor her memory than with this long overdue award. Therefore, I am proud to submit the name of Inez Milholland as a nominee for the Presidential Citizen’s Medal.”

The Inez Milholland Centennial observance is a special project of the National Women’s History Project. Marguerite Kearns and Robert P.J. Cooney Jr. are cochairs of this national initiative. 2017 is big year for women’s suffrage movement events and special programs! on Vimeo.

The year 2017 seems like a long way into the future to be planning for women’s suffrage centennial events and special programs. But work is already underway for 2017 and the 100th anniversary of the Silent Sentinels picketing the White House in 1917. And 2017 is also the year for the New York State suffrage centennial.

Projects in the works include a national suffragist memorial in Lorton, Virginia; the continuation of the Women on 20s campaign; a proposed statue of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony in NYC’s Central Park; a new effort by the National Women’s History Project to gather support for the designation of August 26th as a national holiday; and a 2016 centennial observance for Inez Milholland, American’s suffrage martyr. There’s also support for funding New York State’s women’s suffrage centennial commission, plus more in the works.

If the education and fundraising arm of your organization is interested in planning ahead, you’ll have access now to some great presenters whose schedules are filling up NOW. Celebrate women’s freedom to vote and be on the front lines in your community and region.

When planning for your organization, consider a five-year plan that will take your group through the 2020 national centyennial observance when American women will have been voting for 100 years.
