Full steam ahead for New York’s 2017 women’s suffrage centennial!

New York State is getting ready for its 2017 suffrage centennial on Vimeo.

Visualizing a suffrage centennial celebration is the first step in actualizing it. And it’s not merely an imaginative process. New York City is actively engaged in doing its part. There’s an exhibit at New York City’s Municipal Archives through June 2015; a call from the New York State Museum for artifacts to be on display at the 2017 exhibit, “Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial”; and a celebration of Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 200th birthday on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Great Hall at Cooper Union with an artistic interpretation of the 1848 Declaration of Sentiments. This is just the beginning. Buckle your seat belts. There’s more to come. Plan events and celebrations. Support the creation of a funded state centennial commission. Preparing for the 2017 state women’s suffrage centennial celebration at the New York State Museum

The New York State has announced it has acquired a series of 1917 Franklin County women’s suffrage petitions from Jean Kubaryk, a teacher at North Warren Central School District. Ms. Kubaryk had been displaying the petitions in her classroom for years, but decided to donate the petitions to the state museum so they can be preserved for future generations. New York State will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage of women’s suffrage in 2017. The petitions will be displayed in an upcoming state museum exhibition, “Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial” that is scheduled to open in the fall of 2017.

Do you remember back in December 2014 when we announced our wish for a funded New York State 2017 suffrage centennial planning commission? Wish List Link.

The commission is one step closer to creation in the New York State Legislature. But the help of New York’s voters is needed to make it a reality. Advocates of such a funded planning commission are busy lining up their representatives and asking them to sign onto the bill as sponsors. And the appropriations part of the legislation won’t be a walk in the park. It will require monitoring the bill’s progress and making your views known, that is, if you live in New York State.

The bill sponsored by Democratic Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and Republican State Senator Betty Little will, if passed by both chambers, create a thirteen-person commission consisting of appointees to coordinate the state’s commemorations. The commission could be funded by $2 million in state funds.

VIDEO: For the past two years people on the ground have appealed to Santa and Mrs. Claus for their help in getting the U.S. Congress to reauthorize the “Votes for Women” trail, also known as the National Women’s Rights History Project Act, legislation faithfully sponsored and supported by U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter.

There’s movement in the hallowed chambers in Washington, DC where this proposed legislation has been stalled. Added to the bill’s support are four cosponsors who include Katko, R-Camillus, and U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, an Albany-area Democrat. U.S. Reps. Richard Hanna and Tom Reed, both Republicans, support the measure. Some supporters cite the potential impact of economic development and cultural heritage tourism on the region, also known as the “Cradle” of the women’s rights movement in the United States. Our wishes for 2015 at the start of the year included a national suffragist memorial outside of Washington, DC and a statue of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in New York City’s Central Park. These two wishes are linked to the 2020 suffrage centennial, and it isn’t a slam dunk. Serious fundraising is underway for both projects. Show your support by following Turning Point Suffragist Memorial (VIDEO)and the Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the Susan B. Anthony Statue Fund. Suffrage Centennial News Notes during Women’s History Month

The New York State Museum, Library and Archives has issued a call to the public to give input and suggestions concerning the upcoming state suffrage centennial in 2017. There’s also more interest than ever in the 2020 suffrage centennial when the nation’s women will have been voting for a century. The “Spirit of 1776” suffrage campaign wagon in the collection of the New York State Museum will be exhibited in 2017 at the state museum in Albany, NY.

An exhibit through June 2015 at New York City’s Municipal Archives is a preview of what’s being planned for the state’s suffrage centennial in 2017 when New York’s women will have been voting for 100 years. New York City government has staff working on the 2017 suffrage centennial. Projects in New York include fundraising for a statue in New York City’s Central Park to honor Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

A message from Dr. Helen Pankhurst to American women voters is part of the upcoming four-day festival and celebration of the Suffrage Wagon Cafe opening on March 28. The festival runs through March 31, 2015. Dr. Pankhurst is the granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst and the great granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, important leaders of the suffrage movement in England. Interest in Emmeline Pankhurst is gathering steam because of the upcoming major motion picture from the U.K., “Suffragette,” expected to be released internationally in October 2015. Meryl Streep has been cast in the role of Emmeline Pankhurst.

“Suffragette” film special photo, plus Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 200th birthday bash!

It’s International Women’s Day, and for this special occasion the stars of the “Suffragette” film from the UK took advantage of the occasion to release a photo with them posing with suffrage descendants Helen Pankhurst and Laura Pankhurst, the great and great-great granddaughters respectively of Emmeline Pankhurst. Meryl Streep will play Mrs. Pankhurst in this major motion picture due for release in September 2015.

The UK may be head and shoulders ahead of the United States in terms of public awareness about the suffrage movement. But on the American shores the momentum is picking up. This is clear in the plans underway to celebrate the 200th birthday of Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 2015. Although all the details have yet to be announced, there’s plenty already in the public domain. The Elizabeth Cady Stanton Hometown Association in Johnstown, NY, for example, has a busy schedule of special events during 2015. And the Women’s Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls, NY has rolled out the red carpet during March 2015, Women’s History Month. All of these events and celebrations are laying a rich and textured base for upcoming suffrage centennials on the local and state levels during the time leading up to the 2020 suffrage centennial.

Alice Paul Institute is 30 years old: Celebrate during Women’s History Month

Alice Paul Institute is celebrating its 30th year on March 19, 2015 by presenting the annual Alice Paul Equality Awards to its “Founding Mothers,” the organization’s eleven original board members. The birth of what’s now known as the Alice Paul Institute dates back to a small group of South Jersey NOW- Alice Paul Chapter members who were inspired by the Equal Rights Amendment. Their first task was to raise funds to purchase Alice Paul’s papers at auction, followed by the group’s incorporation as the Alice Paul Centennial Foundation. Then came the daunting task of raising the funds to purchase and save Paulsdale, Alice Paul’s childhood home. All of this happened and now after 30 years, the Alice Paul Institute is an established suffrage history-friendly organization with its tenacles in local, state, national and international issues and projects. The Alice Paul Equality Awards event will be held from 6-9 p.m. on March 19th at the Westin Mount Laurel, 555 Fellowship Road, Mount Laurel, NJ.

New York’s gearing up for its 2017 suffrage centennial in 2015! Celebrate Women’s History Month!

The stirrings in New York State to plan for the celebration of its 2017 suffrage centennial coincides with a recognition that 100 years ago the state was alive and cooking with organizing on the state level. The 1915 Votes for Women referendum didn’t result in a state victory for New York, but the groundwork was laid for 1917 when New York became a suffrage state. In 1915 three other states conducted spirited referendum campaigns: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. More to come on the 1915 referendum campaigns.

The New York State Council for the Humanities will hold a grants and programs workshop on March 11, 2015, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at VENUE Cultural Education Center (First floor Members Lounge) to discuss program and grants opportunities for the 2017 state suffrage centennial. The event is cosponsored by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network and the New York State Archives. On March 9, 2015 the New York Council on the Humanities will have a presence on Lobbying Day at the NYS Legislature with a “Suffrage Soapbox” with speeches by W.E.B. DuBois, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, and Leonora O’Reilly. Volunteers are being solicited to play these parts.

The City of New York has staff in place that has initiated 2017 suffrage centennial planning. There’s a project underway to establish a statue in Central Park honoring Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. And the New York State Cultural Heritage Tourism Network is working on a web platform to promote the 2017 suffrage celebration. NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo mentioned the state’s rich suffrage history in his 2015 inaugural speech.

Suffrage Centennials stand on the shoulders of The National Women’s History Project

Scratch the surface of women’s history in the United States and you’ll discover the National Women’s History Project. If you’re planning an event for your school or organization, it’s likely that the National Women’s History Project has books, posters, or other resources available for you at its online store.

No one can speak about women’s history without finding their journey leading to the Santa Rosa, California organization started by women’s history activists Molly Murphy MacGregor, Mary Ruthsdotter, Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett, and Bette Morgan. They led a coalition that successfully lobbied the U.S. Congress to designate March as Women’s History Month. The NWHP is known throughout the nation as a clearinghouse that provides essential information and training in multicultural women’s history for educators, community organizations, parents or anyone interested in expanding their understanding of women contributions to U.S. history.

On March 28, 2015 the National Women’s History Project will celebrate its 35th anniversary at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, CA from 2 to 5 p.m. The program will recognize the women’s history honorees in attendance that include Darlene Clark Hine, Polly Welts Kaufman, Holly Near, Vicki Ruiz, Lynn Sherr, and Judy Yung. The $75 tickets are available through the National Women’s History Project web site. Joan of Arc: Important suffrage movement icon now has her own museum

A large Joan of Arc Museum in Rouen, France spread over five levels with ten exhibition spaces is due to open in March 2015. Her fifteenth century trial is one focus, as well as the considerable controversies that have arisen over Joan throughout the centuries. The annual attendance is expected to be between 100,000 and 150,000 visitors.

Joan of Arc represents many things to many people, including the suffrage movement in England and the United States. Joan’s association with the suffrage movement comes close to home. This association is laid out in vivid detail in an excellent article by Kathleen Kelly, a performer and writer who has made Joan of Arc her life’s work. We’ll be hearing more about Inez Milholland, the U.S. suffrage martyr.

VIDEO ABOUT SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL OBSERVANCE of Inez Milholland’s death in 2016.When Milholland led suffrage parades in Washington, DC and New York City, she evoked the Joan of Arc association.

Noted Kelly: “When New York suffragist Inez Milholland, for example, led the women’s March for the Vote in Washington, DC in March 1913, clad all in white and astride a white horse, she didn’t overtly claim to be impersonating Joan of Arc. The electrifying figure she presented was called ‘the Herald’ or simply ‘the Woman on a Horse,’ an evocation of women in the West who already had the vote or a nod to the moral purity of American temperance leaders who frequently dressed in white. But everyone knew who she really was.”

Excellent web educational module released about suffrage movement by Newseum and AAUW

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Newseum in Washington, DC made a major contribution last week with the launching of an educational module for the suffrage movement geared to educators and educational institutions. It’s also more than that. For the AAUW, the suffrage history module is part of a “Program in a Box” project possibility for AAUW members who are encouraged to reach out to educators and community media. Registered users of the Newseum web site can also access lesson plans, graphics, photos and primary documents. This extensive educational outreach is likely to strengthen the audience of interest for suffrage centennial celebrations nationwide, now and in the future.

SuffrageCentennials.com is supportive of parties, events and celebrations, large and small planned for fun and remembering the long and difficult struggle for women to win the vote in the United States and around the world.
