Wyoming celebrates 150 years of women voting!

On December 10, 1869, Wyoming territory passed the first law in United States history granting women the right to vote and hold public office – more than 50 years prior to the U.S. ratification of the 19th amendment. The State of Wyoming’s tourism office is focusing on this commemoration.

Our Special Wishes for Santa in 2018 from Suffrage Centennials!

Our special wish for Christmas—Ask Santa to put in a good word at the New York State Museum! on Vimeo.

WE PUT IN REQUESTS FOR TURNING POINT SUFFRAGIST MEMORIAL AND THE NEW YORK STATE MUSEUM

When whispering in Santa’s ear this year, tell him we’d love the “Spirit of 1776” wagon being put on permanent exhibit at the New York State Museum in Albany, New York. We would love to see the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial open by 2020. Have you sent a donation yet?

See if there is any weight he and Mrs. Claus can pull in the direction of getting the Equal Rights Amendment passed before 2023. Yes, that’s right. American women will have been working for equal rights in the U.S. Constitution for 100 years  by 2023. Are we going to let this deadline pass? Put ERA support on your “to do” list for 2019.

SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE NATIONAL VOTES FOR WOMEN TRAIL

And spread the word about the fundraising campaign to build a database for the national votes for women trail. Here’s a video to lay out the particulars.

National Votes for Women Trail – GoFundMe from NCWHS on Vimeo.

Does it feel right celebrating women’s freedom to vote if the election process is manipulated, if voters are denied access to this essential right? We can’t isolate these concerns from the celebrations. If we can’t, we owe our grandmothers and activist ancestors an explanation.

MAKE THE ELECTORAL SYSTEM HONEST AND FREE

Have a productive New Year!

Patriotic protest, plus program about Matilda Joslyn Gage!

Patriotic Protest theme of suffrage movement included “Spirit of 1776” wagon! on Vimeo.

MATILDA JOSLYN GAGE CLASSIC—PROGRAM

Kathleen Bishop will discuss the classic, Woman, Church and State, by Matilda Joslyn Gage originally published in 1893. The program is scheduled for October 23, 8:30 p.m., at the Gage house in Fayetteville, NY. This work was so controversial that the local school library would not allow the book on their shelves, and Anthony Comstock threatened to arrest anyone who allowed young people to have access to it. These writings continue to be controversial today but explain a great deal why women have not gained full rights as predicted by Gage. She understood that political power involved more than gaining the right to vote but also included awareness and changing of the power the church and state. As an additional feature, Bishop, who is an antique collector, will present her experience of hunting for treasures for the Oz room at the Fayetteville, NY site and the importance of antiques that she found. Admission is $15.

It has been a great year for the “Spirit of 1776” suffrage wagon!

The “Spirit of 1776” at Long Beach,NY on July 4, 1913.

What a splendid year it has been for the “Spirit of 1776″suffrage campaign wagon used by Edna Kearns in New York City and on Long Island. The wagon was exhibited at the New York State Capitol in March 2017 and then it moved over to the lobby at the New York State Museum. The “Votes for Women” exhibition was up from November 2017 to May 2018. And the wagon was in the museum lobby greeting visitors from the state and around the world. What a terrific two years. Great job, New York State!

“Votes for Women” exhibit on view at New York State Museum to Mother’s Day 2018!

“Spirit of 1776” wagon on exhibit at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY through May 2018! on Vimeo.

Walk through the front door of the New York State Museum in Albany, New York and the exhibit’s impact is felt immediately in the lobby when viewing the “Spirit of 1776” horse-drawn suffrage campaign wagon used by Quaker activist Edna Buckman Kearns in New York City and Long Island in 1913.

Turn to the right in the direction of the museum’s West Gallery and enter a foyer where larger-than-life images of women activists bridge the past and present. These activist heroines peer at us from 1917, 1977, and 2017 with determined and persistent expressions that keep museum visitors from feeling distant from the exhibit’s content. New York State is the cradle of the women’s rights movement in the United States. Most Americans aren’t even aware of this.

“Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial” is a large-scale exhibition at the New York State Museum with a companion catalog reflecting a collaboration between three state agencies that will keep this display on public view through May 13, 2018. New York’s men voters approved extending the ballot to women in 1917 after a difficult uphill effort by the state’s women over seven decades.

“Votes for Women” is an exhibit dedicated to the cause of freedom. Several hundred people attended a suffrage history conference sponsored by the NYS Cultural Heritage Tourism Network, in addition to a reception hosted by the NYS League of Women Voters on November 3, 2017, the day before the exhibition opened to the public.

Spirit may be difficult to put into words, but the collection of banners, memorabilia, symbols, tools, multi-media aids, and information panels presented a powerful, stimulating, and provocative reminder of decades of struggle for voting rights.

The exhibit is open to Mother’s Day in May 2018. This is a “must see.”
