I made a big serving of hummus this morning for breakfast with pita bread and hot tea. I looked over the refrigerator contents and the cans of organic chickpeas screamed at me from the kitchen shelf. Have us for breakfast…they said. I took down my blender and cranked up the hot water for tea.

Cleaning up after myself is the most difficult part of eyeballing the ingredients to make hummus for breakfast.  The blender isn’t the easiest to clean, but it a necessary part of the process—

Chickpeas, cooked. Tahini. Olive oil. Lemon. A dash of hot sauce. A whiff of garlic. Sake vinegar. Soy sauce. Whatever.

This goes down easy, but that’s not true with the news this morning that the US Congress is so divided that it’s unlikely to get much passed from now to the 2024 presidential election.

So I need vitamins, hummus, and plenty of caffein over the next two years.

Who cares if women have been working for 100 years with the goal of an equal rights. amendment to the US Constitution!  We care, and our job is to keep the issue alive.

This is our goal and the reason we persist.

This web site, SuffrageCentennials.com, owes a great deal to the volunteers who for a decade from 2010 to 2020 had a vision. We were going to celebrate 100 years of US women voting by continuing our postings and spending the time and effort to do what we could to contribute to the effort of getting an equal rights amendment included in the US Constitution.

So we are working, and reaching out to others on Planet Earth who are also facing obstacles.

OUR SUCCESSES AND LIMITATIONS IN BRINGING WOMEN TOGETHER

We were successful in part. The worldwide pandemic limited the activities, but there were many centennial accomplishments in 2020 in spite of the lockdowns and different issues popping up in many quarters. We completed our goals of a celebration. Then the atmosphere shifted with court decisions and new priorities. The handwriting is on the wall. We are leaning in the direction of 2023 with the 100th anniversary of US women working for an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution.

Our vision has prevailed. And now new generations are carrying the torch. The world is in a turmoil and some citizens believe we are headed into a downturn as far as women are concerned. Others have different points of view. We’re urging others to keep an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution alive and center in our hopes and dreams.

AN ENDING TO THE VOLUNTEER EFFORTS AFTER CLOSE TO A DECADE?

As of the end of 2022 approaches, Suffrage Wagon News Channel will continue publishing. The Spirit of 1776 suffrage campaign wagon will move forward as part of the permanent collection of the New York State Museum. Thanks to the many friends of supporters of SuffrageCentennials.com

WE HAVE JOINED THE ERA COALITION

Part of our work consists of keeping issues alive. The suffrage activist Alice Paul devoted her life to winning the right to vote of American women, as well as an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution. She wrote the first version of the ERA in 1923. The year, 2023, is the 100th anniversary of US women working for an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution.

Americans of all shapes and backgrounds will be honoring the work of Alice Paul in 2023 when our eyes shift to the upcoming centennial campaign suffrage centennial campaign in 1923. It’s the date associated with the 2023 date of US women working on an amendment to the US Constitution for 100 years.  We have an active ERA coalition in place to make 2023 the target for an ERA passage. And there is an Alice Paul Institute in New Jersey.

You will be hearing a lot about the 100 year anniversary during 2023. Is the US going to ignore this very important suffrage centennial? Or make it a “top priority?”

History isn’t something we compartmentalize. It lives. It breathes. It’s very much in our awareness. This message is being shared in conjunction with institutions and museums, as well as recently published books, museum exhibitions, and historical society exhibits and related events. Our ancestors and family members engaged in social awareness and activism, passed the torch to others now and in the future, and they carry on the work. Find out more about this. WE ARE PARTNERS IN THE NATIONAL ERA COALITION

Members of the ERA Coalition, also known as partners, will be meeting biweekly to facilitate campaigns on the local level. These gatherings will be scheduled every other Thursday at 1 p.m., EST. Let us know if you have sent letters to the editor of local newspapers, or op-eds.

The next generation after the wave resulting in the grandchildren of the suffragists is portrayed in this terrific treatment about young women who love to be out on the ballfields of cities and small towns carving out their own identity by way of their own baseball league. It’s a joy to contemplate and assist in being there to witness how the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution affected the lives of a diverse group of concerned women.

WHAT IS A “TOP PRIORITY” FOR THE US SENATE?

We are getting the impression that an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution is NOT a top priority for the US Senate. The US House of Representatives considered an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution a top priority when it passed legislation removing the time limits on ratification.

And now we women of the US must convince the US Senate that this is an important goal. Why? The 100th anniversary of the US Constitution in 2020 wasn’t enough? The 100th anniversary of US women working for an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution in 2023 isn’t enough?

THE PROPOSED ERA TO THE US CONSTITUTION INCLUDES MEN

YES. The equal rights amendment to the US Constitution protects people of all sexes and identifications.

By 2025, the goal is to have 500 partners working for the passage of the ERA. This suggests that our struggle may be a long one.  What do we US women have to do now? Cartwheels? A standing army? A letter campaign to the US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer? That’s what the ERA Coalition is recommending.

Since SuffrageCentennials.com is a partner of the ERA Coalition, we have committed ourselves to write letters to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

This web site has been powered by the efforts of volunteers for almost a decade. We honor the contributions of many volunteers, now and over 100 years ago, who did what they could so that we could build on that equality base and move the support work forward. What’s the fundamental problem? Is it because US women have conducted a nonviolent campaign for equal rights since the founding of this nation? There seems to be a continuing problem. What is it? Is it required now that US women must write letters to Chuck Schumer in order to move this issue forward?

SuffrageCentennials.com sent a representative to the ERA Coalition meeting in September 2022. We’ll be sending email updates and publish on an irregular basis about the ERA or equal rights amendment progress during 2023 until the recruiting is complete for more grassroots volunteers to share the work load.

Remember that some day we will all come together. Build a beloved community so we keep the instances of burnout under control.

DO WE HONOR SOME ACTIVISTS AND THEN LABEL AND MAKE JUDGMENTS ABOUT OTHERS?

We honor the range of those who participated in the early women’s rights movement in the United States. Contrary to some claims, the campaigning to win the vote for women in the United States was not monolithic. There were hundreds of women’s suffrage organizations, and all participants weren’t required to agree on anything more than women should be allowed to vote and participate in the public affairs of the nation.

The context now reflects a diverse range of supporters. Those who worked for the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution represented women’s voting rights who didn’t speak with one voice and one point of view. The WHY behind their actions is a study that is, in itself, an unfinished revolution.

THE “WHY” OF THOSE WHO MARCHED, AS WELL AS OTHERS WHO DIDN’T…

US women were marginalized and virtually invisible over 100 years ago. They were fortunate to have even one suffrage image in the history books taught to their children. During and after the 2020 centennial celebration of the 19th amendment, a great deal of information has been uncovered that was not previously available.

This includes a filling out of who participated in the long and diverse struggle, with facts about their backgrounds and special interests.  The “why” of the eff0rts that bridged generations has been included in numerous books, podcasts, archives, and numerous sources identified and consulted. The “why” of the activists themselves is an example of research yet to be completed.

Thank you, Meredith Machen, for recognizing long-term and dedicated supporters, as we celebrate your own commitment to an increased awareness of our valiant women over the past decade. I love this part where we honor each other for the extra effort that is so often unrecognized! Brava!

US women started working on an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution 100 years ago in 1923. Will 2023 be the year that it finally becomes part of the US Constitution?

While we reeled from the news of a pandemic, the national suffrage memorial finally opened outside of Washington, DC.

Here is an example of a big mama who has been around for decades. I remember her inauguration when I was very young and watched on black and white TV. And after the big announcement, there will be a large round of posts about the colonial implications and policies carried forward during these 7o years that speak volumes about the on-the-ground implications of the policies and practices carried out in the name of the UK and the Queen.
