Programs about “Votes for Women” exhibit at New York State Museum during April 2018!

Don’t wait until 2020 to celebrate women’s suffrage. There are three excellent programs scheduled during April 2018 at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY in conjunction with the excellent “Votes for Women” exhibition that opened in November 2017 as part of the state’s suffrage centennial celebration.

The Votes for Women exhibition closes in May 2018 on Mother’s Day.

(1.) Votes for Women Gallery Tour. Sunday, April 8, 2018. 2 p.m. West Gallery. NYS Museum. Free.

Join chief curator of History Jennifer Lemak and senior historian Ashley Hopkins-Benton for a tour of the NYS Museum’s Suffrage Centennial exhibition, Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial. Learn about the history of the Suffrage movement in New York State through artifacts on display and highlighted women who led this equal rights movement. This exhibition was created in partnership with the New York State Archives and New York State Library, and in cooperation with organizations and citizens from across the state.

(2.) Ann Lewis: Messaging, Media, and Motherhood: Political Strategies of the New York Suffrage Campaign. Sunday,April 15, 2018. 2 p.m. Huxley Theatre. NYS Museum.

Ann Lewis’ talk will focus on the political strategies employed by suffragists to pass both the New York State suffrage referendums in 1917 and the 19th Amendment in 1920. Suffragists employed various political strategies to convince elected officials to support suffrage planks and then convince the men of the state to vote for the measure. Following the talk, museum curators will offer a tour of the Votes for Women exhibition.

(3.) Lunch Bite Gallery Tour: “Preservation and Politics in the Suffrage Movement.” April 25, 2018. Noon. West Hall. NYS Museum. Free.

Join senior historian Ashley Hopkins-Benton for a focused tour of the NYS Museum’s suffrage centennial exhibition, “Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial.” Learn about how the suffragists used history to promote their cause and about the story of preserving women’s history sites in New York State.
