Olivia Twine radio interview & “Yellow Wallpaper” final tour: Suffrage Centennial News Notes

Listen to the “NonFiction Railroad” interview of Olivia Twine from WIOX radio in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. “The Writer’s Voice” moderator Bonnie Lykes-Bigler asks Twine, a contributing editor to SuffrageCentennials.com, about the 2017 New York State suffrage centennial. Olivia provides us with a fascinating overview of her work relative to suffrage and women’s history. In 2015, the town of Woodstock, New York passed a resolution encouraging its residents to honor its women’s history and to participate in the 2017 suffrage centennial. Olivia’s recent article on the state centennial highlights upcoming special events and exhibits during 2017.

FINAL TOUR of “THE YELLOW WALLPAPER,” A PROGRAM FOR SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL PROGRAMS

“The Yellow Wallpaper” stars Michèle LaRue in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s feminist thriller. In 1885, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a vibrant young woman and dedicated writer, was brought to her knees by marriage, a well-meaning husband, and a questionable “cure.” Relying on blind faith, instinct, and courage, she willed herself back to health. Perhaps the single element most vital to her recovery was the writing of “The Yellow WallPaper” published in 1892. Turning autobiography to fiction, the story continues to fascinate readers today. This production—a faithful dramatization directed by Warren Kliewer—is fully staged and performed in period costume. Availability: through December 2017. Running time: one hour. Fee: $650, plus travel expenses as negotiated. Fee includes Q&A promotional materials, technical requirements list, playbill master. We’re off to women’s suffrage centennial events at Susan B. Anthony house in Rochester, New York

Follow the Spirit of 1776 wagon to the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House! on Vimeo.

This year, 2017, is the centennial observance of New York State’s women voting for 100 years. As the “Cradle” of the women’s rights movement in the United States, New York has plenty to offer. Head north from New York City (where there’s a lot going on) and then stake out a journey to the Finger Lakes where there’s something for everyone in the family. Four states have suffrage centennial observances planned before the national suffrage centennial in 2020: New York, Michigan, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. Local organizations are linking their action and community agendas to suffrage centennial celebrations. A centennial comes only once a year, so why not take advantage of it?

This year’s program at the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester on February 15, 2017 features Ann Dexter Gordon, the leading authority on Susan B. Anthony, editor of the Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, and research professor in the Department of History at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. See the Anthony Museum & House web site for details.

Advance planning is recommended so that when August 26th in 2017 comes around, you are prepared. August 26th is Women’s Equality Day when we recognize the national observance of the passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. What are you planning? A fundraiser, lecture, exhibit, reception, community project? Susan B. Anthony spent 50 years of her life working for women’s voting rights. A hush comes over the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester, NY when groups, visitors, and tourists open the front door and walk through the building to learn about how the past, present and future come together.

Are you taking advantage of opportunities for events throughout the upcoming year? Do you follow SuffrageCentennials.com on Twitter, Facebook, and the quarterly newsletter?

Celebrate women’s freedom to vote and monitor efforts across the nation to preserve and institute safe and honest voting procedures.

2017 New York State suffrage centennial underway after long anticipation!

Thoughts about a New York State 2017 Suffrage Centennial on Vimeo.

S2388-A  LITTLE  Same as A 1019-A  Gunther   Chapter 471  of 2015
LAWS OF NEW YORK, 2015

CHAPTER 471: AN ACT to create a temporary New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission, and providing for its powers and duties; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof became a law November 20, 2015, with the approval of the Governor. Passed by a majority vote, three-fifths being present. The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows: Section 1. Legislative findings. The legislature hereby finds and declares there is a need to create a New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission to promote the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, which will take place between the years 2017 and 2020. The primary focus of the New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission will be to plan and execute an organized series of statewide programs that celebrate the accomplishment of women’s suffrage and the central role of New Yorkers and New York State in this milestone, while also helping shape the future to ensure a more just and equitable society for all. The legislature finds that the creation of a New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission is necessary to bring together persons qualified by experience and/or by powers vested in them by their offices to coordinate and facilitate such a multi-year event…

Four more states on the bandwagon for women’s suffrage centennials!

Four more states get on the women’s suffrage centennial bandwagon! on Vimeo.

Four states have yet to celebrate their state suffrage centennials before 2020, the national suffrage centennial in 2020. Follow the progress on SuffrageCentennials.com

Join the National Women’s History Project’s new initiative— the establishment of a new Women’s History Alliance, which will help link women’s history advocates at the local, state, and federal level and significantly expand each group’s circle of influence.

Open to individuals and organizations, this new effort will help connect educators, performers, keepers of historic sites, agencies, and organizations in their work recognizing women’s history and preparing for the woman suffrage centennial in 2020.

Building on the success of Women’s History Month, the primary goal of the new Alliance is to work toward having Women’s Equality Day—August 26th, the anniversary of American women winning the right to vote—declared a federal holiday. There is no federal holiday recognizing women. Male figures are celebrated from President’s Day to Christmas. The great achievement of the 20th century—the emancipation and empowerment of women—calls for recognition at the national level.

Centennial celebrations thru 2020 engage folks worldwide! on Vimeo.

The Lake George Historical Association Museum has set aside a small exhibition room in the LGHA Museum, 290 Canada Street, Lake George, NY to interpret suffrage activity in the Town of Caldwell (later Lake George and Village of Lake George) from the early 19th century through 1920. This year, 2017, marks the NY State suffrage centennial. Susan B. Anthony visited Lake George on several occasions to press for the cause for women suffrage. Katrina Trask, George Foster Peabody, Mary Loines and Mary Jacobi were among the Lake George/Bolton residents who persisted in keeping the issues alive. The pro and anti suffrage constituencies will be addressed. The LGHA has received a grant from the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) to kick off a 2107 exhibition with a theatrical performance portraying suffragists in Warren (Lake George) and Essex (Ticonderoga) Counties. LGHA collaborated with North Country Community College and the Ticonderoga Womens Studies Program to develop a dramatic script about the life of Essex resident Inez Milholland for the musical theater department at Lake George High School that was performed in 2016. Petition to President Obama about Inez Milholland, American suffrage martyr! on Vimeo.

The nomination for a presidential citizens medal for Inez Milholland (1886-1916) is now circulating in Washington, DC. More than a year ago U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier nominated Milholland for the honor. We have no word as to the prospect of the award being considered before the transition of one administration to another. This year, 2016, is the centennial observance of Milholland’s death. For the past year the National Women’s History Project has been working hard to write Inez into American history as the nation’s suffrage martyr. See the centennial web site: InezMilhollandCentennial.com

This past week, high school students in Lake George, New York featured Inez along with other votes for women activists in a production, “Forward into Light,” that attracted considerable attention in Lake George, NY and surrounding communities.

A Santa wish list for 2016 focuses on women’s suffrage projects & centennial programs!

Watch the Video

Santa, will you save the day for a citizens medal for Inez Milholland? on Vimeo.

Will “Spirit of 1776” will on exhibit in 2020? on Vimeo.

We’re coming down to the wire. Every year we circulate our Santa wish list. Take a look at our wish list for December 2014. We wished for a funded New York State suffrage centennial commission. NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation creating and funding a suffrage centennial commission from 2017 through 2020, the nation’s suffrage centennial when American women will have been voting for 100 years.

This year, 2016, we’re asking Santa for a miracle: a presidential citizens medal for our nation’s suffrage martyr, Inez Milholland. This year, 2016, is the centennial observance of her death on November 25, 1916. Visit the centennial web site for details. InezMilhollandCentennial.com The citizens medal application has been sponsored and supported by the National Womens History Project.

We’re carrying forward two wishes from the past: a national women’s suffrage memorial as proposed and being planned by Turning Point Suffragist Memorial. And a statue in NYC’s Central Park honoring Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and many others. Let’s support the completion of a memorial and a women’s statue in Central Park on or before the national 2020 suffrage centennial. To these wishes, we’ve added the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution!

Highlights of Suffrage Centennials: From now to 2020, go where the action is for votes for women! on Vimeo.

This video highlights past suffrage centennials. We’re on to other events and celebrations. New York State has a funded suffrage commission preparing for 2017, the state’s celebration of 100 years of the state’s women voting. Canada has suffrage centennial events in 2016. Tennessee has a new statue that has been unveiled.

Breaking NewsNew York State women elected to public office who are preparing for 2017 haven’t been shy about commenting on the inappropriate remarks by Republican Party presidential nominee Donald Trump released recently. Many of them have been involved in the lobbying effort to create and fund a state suffrage centennial commission, including many legislators signing on to the bill passed last year in Albany, NY.

One suffrage centennial supporter, NYS Republican State Senator Betty Little, had this to say about Trump’s public comments on News10: “As a member of the Senate Republican conference, I have been very proud of our work to advance issues important to women. I was honored to sponsor the law creating the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission to celebrate women gaining the right to vote in New York State in 1917. Certainly I am very disappointed in Trump’s statements on that tape. These are his words, his actions and his responsibility to address them. It is up to voters to make their own conclusions and decisions.”
